Kelpie by JollyRotten Kelpie by JollyRotten
This Kelpie idea is based on a book that I read. It was about Big Foot and also Sea Monsters. There were a lot of eyewitnesses who reported that the sea monsters they had seen, looked like black horses with long ears, necks and tails etc. which sounded more like a form of Kelpie.

Ah, pity, I wanted to participate in "deviant critique" with this, but my subscription has terminated. Critique welcome, nonetheless. ^^

I'm not good with words so I'll just say I love this  Kelpies are so cool, I adore the musculature and those cute little spots :)

This doesn't look anything like the kelpies from all of my old childhood books and that's awesome. I really like this rendition and I think it looks a lot spookier than a simple black pony with glowing eyes. This is wonderful.

Thanks a lot! Though I wanted its eyes to be bigger and more glowing, but it didn't fit the rest of the horse.

Ooh, I like this! I've read about Kelpies. They either pretend to be drowning to trick humans into rescuing them only for them to be drowned themselves and then eaten, or they trick humans into riding on their backs and running off cliffs into the sea. Does that sound right?

well, great drawing and glad to know about the kelpies and this story as well :)
in my opinion, I think the drawing quality is excellent and excellent work on the lightening, specially in the legs. The designe is also creative, there are a lot of details that you can admire in this picture, such as the tale and long neck and the way you made it to draw thsi creature with long ears and this still looking like a horse and not a donkey.

The only thing I would change is the you might add a little of variety in the coloring, is a monochromy and looks well, but you could, I don´t know, add some other colors in the background and give a little of variety to the picture. That would be it, but the rest is simply perfect :)

I'm so sensitive to colour that I often lower the saturation more and more while working. Maybe I should try to watch out for this habit in the future. ^^
Thanks!

amazing picture! background is fantastic, and you've captured the kelpie well.

my critique would be that perhaps the head could be a little bigger, as it is slightly out of proportion to the body and tail. I also think that the body should have more of a fluid, watery look to it, as the kelpie slinks through the water, almost like a snake swimming or an eel, if that makes sense.
i like the spikes you have given it along it's mane and base of the tail, perhaps if they were a little longer, pointing backwards? again to add to the fluidity of the creature.
the tail suits it perfectly, like an eels tail.
however, you have captured the horse aspects of the kelpie perfectly, and the body and head are stunningly drawn, so lifelike and muscular!

all in all, and amazing piece, with some tweaks, you could really capture the kelpie to perfection. :D

hope that was ok! it was my first real crit!

Thanks. ^^

I wanted to give it a wet skin and also a mor esnake like look, but I simply couldn't manage. ^^
Funny you mention the spikes, they were in fact longer, but I thought people would find it ridiculous. xD

Critique noted! :D

i'm glad you didn't mind my critique! i always worry i upset people! but really i love the drawing, you've captured it beautifully :D you should read a few of the books written by scottish authors about kelpies, like 'the kelpie's pearls' which i think was by mollie hunter. you will probably really enjoy it :D

Would be stupid If I ask for critique and get upset. ^^
Ok, I would If someone just said "this is shit" and no further explanation. xD

Currently I'm researching a lot and read old irish/scottish/english/welsh folktales, but maybe later I will start with novels too. ^^

Thanks for the offer!
Can you recommend anything apart from novels?
So far I picked out some books which I have started /want to start, for example "Irish Fairy Legends" by Thomas Crofton Crooker.

i haven't read it myself, but i'm told that the 'Encyclopedia of Fairies: Hobgoblins, Brownies, Bogies and Other Supernatural Creatures' by katharine biggs is supposed to be excellent.

Just wanted to thank you for the recommendation!
I've recently got my hands on a copy of the "Encyclopedia of Fairies" from Katharina Brigss.
It was an old library copy and therefore halfway affordable. ^^
It is really a good book, especially for research! Apart from the alphabetically listed Information you get from it, there is also a lot of additional information, leading to other authors and books.
